April Tweets: Eighth Annual E-news Study Finds Basic Editing Lessons Still Unlearned
Enterprise reporting deficiency was the leading shortfall observed by 50 B2B sites analyzed in the eighth annual e-news delivery study from Editorial Solutions, Inc. Most articles reviewed lost 35 to 40 points when the study’s new Enterprise Reporting Prominence (ERP) calculation was applied. But several other basic types of errors prevented the final overall scores of all sites from reaching the study’s basic target score of 80 out of a 100 points. These shortcomings included photo captions that lacked story-telling value and quoting identical sources in story after story rather than seeking out new authoritative sources.
As you’ll see, several items in April’s tweets report document progress in gathering information for this year’s annual study. Also offered: exclusive coverage of an ASBPE workshop on the impact of COVID-19 on B2B editorial practice.

When scoring e-news delivery for B2B competitive analysis projects, I’ve often found reason to deduct 40 points up front (out of possible 100) for inadequate presence of enterprise reporting. Common flaw: no end-user quotes.

Full report summarizing my 8th annual B2B e-news study finding will appear later this week. Dual scoring target for this report covered editing basics skill as well as End User Prominence (ERP). Most sites missed both challenges.

My B2B 8th annual e-news study confirms tendency to quote vendors/other sources more often than end users. Of 511 direct quotes the study reviewed, only 211 were provided by end-users. End-User Visibility was only 0.4.

Recent research suggests best e-news value is achieved by articles using 500-800 words. My 8th annual 50-site B2B e-news study shows that of 500 articles viewed, 75 use more than 500 words; 45 articles use more than 750 words.

My 50-site 8th annual B2B e-news site analysis is now complete. Findings will begin rolling out next week. Evidence of enterprise reporting is rare; “exceptional” may be a more appropriate ID when extra effort is obvious.

While reviewing e-news site data for my current study, I see many editors still write captions for face photos that are label rather than story-telling. Instead of settling just for someone’s name as a caption, provide an interesting detail.

Under pressure overloaded with story assignments, besieged editors often resort to “old friends.” Meaning that for all their articles they use the same limited number of sources. This can hurt you during competitive reviews.
