September Tweets Push for Better Online News Practices
In the past month, my Twitter feed focused on improving online-news enterprise reporting, connecting with end-users, and reinforcing basic editing skills. Also covered were management tips pertaining to the value of specialized editorial positions, the benefits of self-scoring profiles, and the importance of creating a “request to unpublish” policy. If you like what you see, subscribe to my Twitter feed.
Embedded link usage is all over the lot, according to my 7th annual B2B e-news study. Recommended ELU should average 1.0 (one link per article). Of 50 sites reviewed (10 articles per site), 28 made the grade. Of the other 22, 15 kept ELU below 0.6. What’s your ELU target?

As an editorial manager at a B2B growth company, you may need to create senior level positions that justify financial growth. My first step in that direction was a field editor team. Later on came positions requiring security and management coverage for all publications.

Key table appearing in upcoming full report on results of my Phase VII online news study compares ten top-scoring sites vs. ten worst scorers. Data suggests clear road to improvement many sites need when it comes to enterprise, end-user connections, foggy editing.

Self-scoring profiles are excellent editorial training aids. You can fashion documents — using several yes/no questions — for many job functions. While VP/editorial, I created 7 profiles. Best ones: complaint handling, burnout symptoms, editorial marketing. wearer of many hats.

According to Editorial Solution Inc.’s 7th annual e-news delivery study, 410 quotes were collectively posted by the 50 sites reviewed. Of that total, 208 (about 50.6%) were end-user sourced. Is that good? Not really, at least when you check the numbers: https://t.co/Q1E1uWQugT

Top three scorers in Editorial Solutions Phase VII online news delivery study, Claims Journal, Space News, Nation’s Restaurant News. The trio showed especially well in Fix-It Alert Evaluation; FIA assesses the percent of total factors evaluated that reflect error-free execution.

My revised scoring study for online news performance measurement will now include specific end-user quote targets. Some editors already cover this in their print news sections. But generally speaking, too many sites rely too heavily on quoting vendors and other sources.

While preparing items for ASBPE’s next ethics newsletter, I was reminded that many editors have yet to create “request to unpublish” policy. When you create that policy, be sure to include an “exceptions:” clause defining when leniency is appropriate.

One highlight of this month’s Online News promotion — for many folks — is the “before and after” report provided via Sentence Flow Analysis. This means that every article sentence exceeding 30 words will be defogged to demonstrate how future brevity can be achieved.
